Considering human and animal studies, as well as research on any significant aspects, such as tumor pathology, genetic factors, metabolism and toxicology of the agent, it classifies chemical substances according to their carcinogenic potential.

GROUP 1 

 The agent is carcinogenic to humans.
When there is sufficient evidence that the agent is carcinogenic to humans;

 

GROUP 2A 

 The agent is probably carcinogenic to humans. When there is sufficient evidence that the agent is carcinogenic to animals and limited or insufficient evidence that it is carcinogenic to humans;

  

GROUP 2B 

The agent is possibly carcinogenic to humans. When there is limited evidence that the agent is carcinogenic to humans and insufficient evidence that it is carcinogenic to animals or when there is insufficient evidence in either case, but there is relevant evidence that it may be carcinogenic;

GROUP 3 

The agent is not classified as carcinogenic to humans. When evidence is inadequate to state that that agent is carcinogenic to humans and animals or when the agent does not fit in any other group;

GROUP 4 

The agent is probably not carcinogenic. When evidence is lacking that the agent is carcinogenic in humans or animals.
